Milking Timeby Winslow HomerAfter a long day of milking the cows, the little boy, named James, waits for the sunset. It's about 5:00, so James has to wait for a while. It's worth it, he thought, to see the beautiful scenery against the blood red sky. As he's watching, a woman walks along and stops right beside him. "Hello, young man." James turns, surprised, and says, "Good afternoon, ma'am. How is your walk?" She replies," Very fine, boy. Say, you seem like a smart young lad. Do you happen to know where I can find Harriet Tubman?" The boy frowns and shakes his head. "Ma'am, I think you're a little confused. Harriet Tubman died about 80 years ago." Now it was the woman's turn to be confused. "Oh! What about all the abolitionists and the underground railroad?" He replies, "Ma'am, there ain’t no more slaves down ‘ere in the South. They banned all slavery a long time ago.” The lady is stunned. She turns to walk away, then says, “Thank you, son. I’ll see you around sometime.” James watched as the strange woman starts walking back the way she came, and then slowly disappears into thin air. He looks around for her, but finds no trace of the lady anywhere. He shrugs and says aloud, “Must have been my imagination.” James turns around to see that the sun is just about to set. As he is watching the wonderful array of purples, oranges, and reds decorating the sky, he is grateful that there isn’t any more slavery and for the amazing life he’s had so far.The heat of the sun fades as it sets behind the hills of the south.
