Upper Elementary (Grades 3-5)
Colorful Narratives - Descriptive Writing Inspired by the Visual Arts
This lesson uses art as inspiration for descriptive writing. Students will create their own "word pictures" in response to a work of art of their choice, writing in first-person and drawing on sensory details to make their writing more vivid and descriptive.

(Grades 6-8)
Picture a Story - Exploring Story Structure Through Art & Writing
An image, similar to a story, can include elements such as setting, characters, and plot. In this lesson students will have the opportunity to creative their own unique "work of art," followed by writing a story in response to the image they have created.

Ekphrasis & the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
The poetic device of ekphrasis, a verbal description or commentary on a visual work of art, flourished during the time of the Pre-Raphaelites. In this lesson, students will select a work of art from the Delaware Art Museum’s collection of British Pre-Raphaelite Art to create an ekphrastic poem.
